Los Angeles Unified School District/Beyond the Bell All District Honor Band Marches in Los Angeles Kingdom Day Parade

On Monday, January 16, 2017 the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) Beyond the Bell (BTB) All District Honor Band participated in the 32nd Los Angeles Kingdom Day Parade.  Students celebrated the spirit of Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. as the leading band in the parade. Beyond the Bell’s Middle School Unit held its fourth annual YS PLUS Battle of the Books competition at Burroughs MS on December 3rd, 2016. Students from 36 YS PLUS sites across the city dressed as their favorite book character and participated in a trivia event in an attempt to earn the honor of becoming the Battle of the Books Champion. Social Emotional Learning After School

LAUSD’s Beyond the Bell (BTB) Branch is pleased to be working with six other California school districts in addressing the social emotional learning (SEL) needs of students.  Under the coordination & assistance of The Partnership for Children & Youth (http://partnerforchildren.org/) the following school Districts are developing action plans to better align expanded learning resources and programs to improve Social-Emotional outcomes for students.•    Los Angeles Unified School District•    Santa Ana Unified School District•    Sacramento Unified School District•    San Francisco Unified School District •    Oakland Unified School District•    San Leandro Unified School District•    San Rafael Unified School DistrictThe LAUSD team is comprised of the Beyond the Bell Branch Senior Executive Director Alvaro Cortès, Health Education Program Coordinator Dr. Lori Vollandt, Human Resources Administrator Dr. Marco Nava, BTB Field Coordinators Maria Bracamonte and Isaure Blandin, and specialist Dr. Victor Gonzalez. District teams have met and worked to identify the hallmarks of effective SEL programs and action steps each district can take to further meet the SEL needs of students. Four competencies identified to support SEL growth include a growth mindset, self-efficacy, self-motivation and social awareness.Research has shown that, “afterschool programs that follow four evidence-based practices are successful in promoting young people’s personal and social development” (Durlak, Weissberg, & Pachan, 2010).  Beyond the Bell is working to build the capacity of after school staff to support students in the identified SEL competencies.  To see the full plan and learn more about Social Emotional Learning visit http://bit.ly/SEL-BTB .......
