Students Set Sail for “Science at Sea”

Beyond the Bell hosted students from Bridge, Coliseum, Latona and Mayberry Elementary Schools for the “Science at Sea” weekend program in March.  The students in grades 4-6 participated in an overnight weekend adventure at LAUSD’s Pt. Fermin Outdoor Education Center.  Funded by the CORE Extended Learning Opportunity Program to provide supplemental intervention and enrichment to boost academic success, students took on weekend roles of Navigators, Engineers, and Field Scientists.  The children began Friday evening by selecting their scientific job assignments.  Working in teams students explored their careers in preparation for the real work they would perform on Saturday.

On Saturday morning students visited the Cabrillo Marine Museum where they became acquainted with the science of California’s coastline aquatic life.  After lunch they boarded a Los Angeles Marine Institute Tall Ship and literally set sail!  Students navigated and captained the ship, implemented their water sampling designs, and performed an analysis of the sea water collected.  The students ended their great day with teambuilding challenges, games and a campfire.
Sunday provided students a peek at the San Pedro Marine Care Center where pinnipeds are rehabilitated to return to the wild and time to reflect on their adventures at the Korean Friendship Bell.  This excursion not only took students out of the breakwater into the Pacific, but beyond their classrooms into the life of real science in action.  This outstanding “Science at Sea” program certainly left our students wanting S’more!
