The LA84 Foundation/ Beyond the Bell Middle School Sports Program culminated its fifth annual District-Wide Volleyball Championships on Saturday March 18th at Roybal Learning Center. Our Boys’/Coed and Girls’ Division Champions showcased their season’s worth of learning at the District Finals with honor and great pride. The exhibition of teamwork, determination and grit provided a vivid example of the benefits our students gain through their participation in the Middle School Sports Program. Ultimately, the Pio Pico Panthers (Girls’ Division) and Portola Conquistadores (Boys’/Coed Division) earned the title of 2017 District Champions!
Each tournament game throughout the day was evidence of our BTB coaches’ commitment to improve and develop our student’s skills within the sport. Our student’s ability to collaborate and persevere throughout the course of the season is a testament to the hard work and dedication that is involved in the process of earning a trip to the District Finals.
Kareyle Dizon of Pio Pico MS provided us some insight on how meaningful her experience has been while in the Beyond the Bell MS Sports Program by stating, “It feels great, I’ve wanted this opportunity for our school since I was in 6th grade. It’s been a dream of mine.” Dizon went on to help lead the Panthers towards their championship and earned Tournament Most Outstanding Player for the girl’s division. She will be attempting to earn a spot on the Venice HS Volleyball team next year as a freshman.
Over the course of the last five years, the sport of Volleyball has gained momentum as our most popular sport amongst our female students. Boys’ participation continues to grow as well in a sport that has only been included in our programming at the District Wide level since 2012. This year over 4,600 students participated in our Volleyball program throughout the District.
The 2017 Volleyball Season also marks the start of our spring sports of Soccer, Softball, Tennis, and Track & Field. These sports along with our fall offerings of Flag Football, Futsal, Flag Rugby and Basketball are available for our students to sample throughout the course of the school year. As our data currently tells us, over 53% of our students participate in a at least 2 sports per year during their middle school experience. Beyond the Bell has embarked on an organizational mission to provide female students with life changing opportunities, such as volleyball, that promote the discovery of talents and skills, and that will support their lasting participation in sports and physical activity. These vivid examples of the student centered opportunities Beyond the Bell provides for the youth of the LAUSD, will leave a blueprint for future generations in our communities to follow for connecting students, schools, and communities during out of school hours.
