It was with great excitement and enthusiasm that the Beyond the Bell Youth Development Program & the Elementary Unit Office concluded the 2nd Annual 26th Mile event at Dodger stadium on March 12th, 2017.  This year 450 schools, including over 30,000 students participated in the seven-week training program.  Over 5,500 students made part of the 12,000 in attendance that included participants, family members and friends that early Sunday morning.

The 26th Mile program, a seven week cardiovascular fitness training and nutrition program, targets students 7-12 years old.  The program educates students about the importance of being healthy and active through simple walking & running exercises and healthy nutritional choices. The students in the program received a training schedule in which they followed weekly scheduled exercises. During seven weeks of training, students in the after school Youth Development Program & Elementary Unit sites, tracked and accumulated a total of 25.2 miles. 

Select students were invited to run the last 1 mile at Dodger Stadium, they concluded the program and accumulated a total of 26.2 miles, which is the same distance as the actual Conqur Endurance Group / Skechers Performance LA Marathon. 

During the Beyond the Bell recreational rotation at each participating site, the program emphasized the positive aspects of exercise and healthy habits.  Special focus was placed on the importance of these types of exercise as lifetime activities for both enjoyment and health benefits.  Enthusiasm and determination from both coaches and students led to many hours of fun and a successful training program.

This activity began on January 23rd 2017 with 7 weeks of training and culminated on Sunday, March 12th with the selected 5,500 students participating at Dodger Stadium.  At the conclusion of the 26.2 mile adventure, each school site and every one of students in training celebrated successful completion of the 26th Mile by conducting a final mile run at their school sites.

Participating in the 26th Mile program is the first positive step in the goal for a healthy lifestyle.  Students will continue to maintain their commitment to being physically active during their daily recreation rotations.

Many thanks of appreciation to Conqur Endurance Group and Tracey Russell CEO, the organizer of the Skechers Performance LA Marathon, for their partnership in this event.  A special thank you to the El Sereno Middle School Band for showcasing their talents as they made the event festive and memorable for the students and families.
