CyberPatriot National Champions

Beyond the Bell (BTB) celebrated a triumph on April 6, 2017, by collecting a second national CyberPatirot program title in three years!  After four rounds of grueling competition, spanning over six months against over 4,400 teams from across the United States and Canada, Team Togo from North Hollywood High School captured gold medals and the Championship Cup.  This continues Beyond the Bell’s winning streak.  BTB teams have won national medals in each of the last four years, and BTB has been fielding at least one team at the nationals for each of the past seven years.

The national CyberPatriot program has grown explosively.  From seven Florida teams nine years ago the program has grown to over 4,400 US and Canadian teams today and two new international programs: CyberCenturian in England and Cyberpatriot Saudi Arabia. Along with the tremendous growth in the program there has been an increase in difficulty.  This year’s teams worked on multiple images, and had to know packet tracer (Cisco networking).  The finals were two days of competition with four different challenges making up nine and a half hours of hard work for each team. It was a grueling schedule that challenged the students in all of the disciplines they had worked on during the year – including forensics and system management.

North Hollywood High School’s champion Team Togo members included: Aled Cuda, Kyle Gusdorf, Jonathan Liu, Jaren Mendelsohn, and Nikola Pratte.  Other participating finalists included Team Balto:  DoHyun Cheon, Alexander Ke, Hanguyl Lyna Kim, and Eugene Woo.  Team Truman included: Bryan Goldenberg, Glen Husman, Jillian Kusch, and Maryam Abbas.  And, Reseda High School’s Team Alpha (A naval Junior ROTC program): Rijul Saxena, Jelani Hampton, Alex Mejia, Jue Nguyen, Sandy Sarmeputra, and Allan Castillo.

Congratulations to our BTB teams! Out of 4,400 teams nationwide only 28 got to go to the finals, and four of those came from our program.  This is a giant achievement and credit goes to their coaches and after school program staff.

At the end of April our teams come together one more time for a friendly BTB Cup competition.  In June, the winning teams from California’s regional competitions will go to San Luis Obispo to compete in the California Cyber Innovation Challenge.

We are looking forward to next year, CyberPatriot X!
