The Beyond the Bell All District Jazz program celebrated its seventh year of existence performing in the Los Angeles 22nd Annual Central Avenue Jazz Festival. The All-City District Jazz Big Band has had the honor of opening the festival since 2010 thanks to the Festival artistic directors Jose Rizo and Michael Dolphin.
The jazz band is comprised of LAUSD High Schools students that rehearse two Saturdays per month, as well as during the summer time, to keep up their “chops.” The band performed such jazz classics as Donna Lee by Charlie Parker, Doxy by Sonny Rollins, Where or When by Richard Rodgers and contemporary tunes such as Brother Mister by Christian McBride.
This year’s soloists included saxophonist Steve Murillo (Birmingham HS) and William Brandt (Hamilton HS), Bassist Dario Bizio (Hamilton HS) and drummer Terran Artis (Cortines HS). Tony White, Beyond the Bell – Music and Entertainment Education, and JB Dyas from the Thelonious Monk Institute of Jazz are the directors of the District Jazz program.
