Santee Education Complex played host to the C5 Los Angeles (C5LA) annual Take Action Campaign College Day Saturday October 21st 2017. Take Action Campaign is a high school leadership and college access program sponsored Beyond the Bell in LAUSD.
One hundred and fifty students from thirty three Take Action Campaign high schools woke up early on a Saturday to board their busses, which transported them to the event. This event was divided into two parts: Underclassmen attended workshops providing information about the path to college, and seniors began work on college applications, preparing personal statements, and starting their Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).
The underclass students began their day with workshops led by C5LA alumni. Students learned about “brag sheets,” high school academic coursework requirements for college admittance, and Scholastic Aptitude Test (SAT)/American College Testing (ACT) tests. Later in the day these students attended a workshop hosted by Eric Moore, from Educate California, who spoke about financial literacy and college resources.
Seniors worked with C5LA volunteers to begin their online University of California (UC) and California State University (CSU) college applications. Seniors also attended a financial aid workshop led by Cash for College. This organization helps students secure funding for college and provided assistance for students in starting their FAFSA application. All students attended a UC Insight Question/Personal Statement workshop led by C5LA board member Judy Rothman Rofé.
After lunch, students attended a college fair, which included fourteen colleges and organizations in attendance: UC’s, Cal States, military branches, local private and community colleges.
With college and financial aid applications deadlines looming, this event helped Take Action seniors alleviate some of their stress. Students spent quality time with wonderful mentors and came away with a good head start on completing important steps on their journey to higher education.
Beyond the Bell extends special thanks to C5LA for sponsoring this event, and to the high school agencies: A World Fit for Kids, Educare, arc, and Keep Youth Doing Something, for making the day a super success.
