Nick and Nellie Come to Harmony School

Author Lila Silvern meeting with parents

Harmony Elementary School’s Saturday Migrant Education Program (MEP) was treated to a special book signing event Saturday, October 21. The parent class was introduced to Nick y Nellie Visitan la Universidad, a book dedicated to LAUSD MEP Coordinator Nellie Barrientos.  The Saturday MEP teachers created a unit of lessons to encourage their students to plan for a college education.  Since no supporting books written for primary grade children were found, Lila Silvern wrote Nick and Nellie Go to College in English and Spanish with illustrations by Luis Garza.

The author and illustrator presented their book to the parents who were guided through a first reading.  They were shown how to build vocabulary in both English and Spanish by discussing the pictures with their children and asking questions that develop critical thinking skills. Parents were given the opportunity to practice these strategies and also make games, puppets and puzzles to share with their children at home.

Students in kindergarten, first and second grades joined the parents for a reading by author Lila Silvern.  She and Luis Garza signed copies of their book. The primary grade teachers in the program were eager for follow-up materials and offered suggestions for future books in the series.  It was an inspiring morning, especially to hear first and second graders calling out Harvard and UCLA as the colleges they planned on attending.
